GenCyber Teacher Workshop: Building Cybersecurity Capacity via Sustained Teacher Training
The University of Tulsa will offer an NSA-funded one week intensive summer workshop for a cohort of 24 teachers followed by sustained collaboration via an online community and resource repository for use during the following
academic year and beyond.
The goals of the program are to:
- Prepare teachers to help all students understand correct and safe on-line behavior, increase diversity and interest in cybersecurity, and increase awareness about careers in the cybersecurity workforce of the Nation.
- Improve teaching methods and materials for delivering cybersecurity content in K-12 curricula.
The foundation of the workshop content will include topics in cryptography and security protocols, threats to critical infrastructure, and wise and safe use of the internet and social media. Social, economic, and legal aspects of cybersecurity will also be considered. Teachers attending the workshop will deepen their own knowledge of these elements of cybersecurity and will receive instructional materials and develop lesson plans and modules for implementation in their school curricula in computer science and technology, science, mathematics, or social science.
Teachers will have opportunities to interact with professionals from TU’s internationally regarded research and academic programs in cybersecurity as well as specialists from NSA, other federal agencies, and local law enforcement.
Who should apply? High school and middle school teachers in mathematics, computer science/technology, science, and social studies who are interested in integrating topics related to cybersecurity into their classes. This is an interdisciplinary program and no prior computer science or programming experience is required.
How much does it cost? The workshop is free; the cost is funded by a grant from NSA.
Stipend? There will be a stipend paid to all participants who complete the workshop and the follow up activities.
Graduate Credit: Participants who complete all requirements for the workshop and follow-up assignments may apply to receive three hours of graduate credit tuition free.
