Professional Development
Classroom Discourse
Grade Levels: PK - 12th
Length: .5 - 3 hrs
Imagine a classroom where students share their ideas and hypotheses, respectfully debate and critique each other, and build onto each other's thoughts as the class works together to make sense of a puzzling phenomenon. You can create that classroom! Learn how to facilitate productive discussions that reflect the authentic reasoning skills of real scientists.
If I Built the Zoo: Engineering Design
Grade Levels: 3rd - 12th
Length: 1 - 1.5 hrs
In this session, educators will unpack how tinkering, making, and engineering each contribute to student learning, and how intentional scaffolding can shift the focus from “what it looks like” to “what it teaches.” Participants will experience the activity from the learner's perspective and reflect on how to foster problem-solving, iteration, and authentic connections to life science, environmental design, and conservation.
Makey Makey Basics
Grade Levels: 3rd - 12th
Length: 1 - 3 hrs
Learn how to bring hands-on invention and coding into your classroom! The basic one-hour session guides beginning users through fundamental circuitry, transforming everyday objects into touchpads for engaging student learning. For deeper exploration, the two-to-three-hour session integrates Makey Makey with Scratch, a free block-based coding language, demonstrating how to build projects like a video arcade.
Making Assessments 3D
Grade Levels: PK - 12th
Length: 1.5 hrs
Learn how to align assessments with OAS-S to make assessments 3-dimensional. This session empowers teachers to implement alternative assessment designs to strengthen students' science skills and knowledge. Teachers will learn tools to analyze the strength of lesson plans and alignment with standards and simplifying grading with more strategic lesson design.
Scientific Modeling
Grade Levels: PK - 12th
Length: 30 min - 2 hrs
This session introduces educators to the scientific process of modeling. Modeling allows students to make their thinking visible, as they make sense of phenomena, try out ideas and hypotheses, and engage in collective thinking. Modeling replicates the process of figuring out that scientists do as they attempt to make sense of natural phenomena.
STEM Soundboard
Grade Levels: PK - 12th
Length: 30 min - 1.5 hrs
What does it mean to do "STEM" and how do you make sure you're integrating all 4 disciplines? This PD uses the concept of a soundboard to help you think about "turning up" or "turning down" different concepts. If you are new to STEM or a veteran who's looking for ways to be more intentional about planning multi-disciplinary lessons, this PD is sure to inspire!
Classroom Activities
Kubo STEM Challenges
Grade Level(s): PK - 8th
Length: 20 min - 1.5 hrs
Learn the basics of Kubo robots and/or more advanced features such as loops and subroutines. Incorporate the Coding+ set for more advanced activities, including using the Engineering Design Process to solve a problem.
