Funding for Math Circle events is provided by the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, The University of Tulsa Mathematics Department, The University of Tulsa College of Engineering and Natural Sciences, National Science Foundation, American Institute for Mathematics, National Security Agency, Tulsa Engineering Foundation, and Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers.
McFarlin Library Student Study
The McFarlin Library is a beautiful setting in the middle of The University of Tulsa Campus for our 3- day workshop. The Student Study is on the 2nd floor of the library and has large windows overlooking the Tulsa skyline.
Typical Day – 8:15 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.

What is a Math Teachers’ Circle?
Math Teachers’ Circles (MTC) bring together middle school math teachers, high school and college mathematics educators, and professional mathematicians to enrich the teachers’ experience of
mathematical problem-solving and build mathematical community. Our goals are to:
- Increase the confidence of middle school math teachers in problem-solving
- Deepen teachers’ content knowledge through exploring mathematically rich problems and developing an arsenal of techniques for solving unfamiliar and challenging problems
- Form long-term professional relationships among teachers and mathematicians through regular, highly interactive meetings
- Provide support for teachers who want to bring richer mathematical experiences to their students.
Tulsa Math Teachers’ Circle
The Tulsa Math Teachers’ Circle (TMTC) meets throughout the academic year in selected months. TMTC hosted its first academic year meeting in October, 2013. We have also hosted five summer immersion workshops: in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. TMTC Website: http://tmtc.utulsa.edu/
Who are the presenters?
Mark Brown: Mark is a Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, KS. He serves the university as the Faculty Athletics Representative and also leads the Heartland Math Teachers’ Circle, hosted by MNU. Prior to his 17 years at the university, Mark taught high school math in south central Kansas for 7 years.
Mark enjoys running, teaching ESL at his church, andspending time with his wife and children.
Paul Zeitz: Professor and former Chair of the Mathematics and Statistics department of USF.
Originally trained as an ergodic theorist (Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley, 1992), today his overriding interest is mathematical problem solving and the promulgation of an Eastern European-inspired problemsolving culture to American audiences.
Towards this end, Paul wrote The Art and Craft of Problem Solving in 1998, co-founded the Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad in 1999, and co-founded the San Francisco Math Circle in 2005. In 2009 he produced a series of video lectures for The Teaching Company on problem solving. The Art and Craft of Problem Solving is now in its 3rd edition, and has been translated into Chinese, Japanese and Thai.
Paul is a co-founder and the Chair of the Board of Directors for Proof School, a unique independent secondary school in San Francisco for children in grades 6–12 who love math. Proof School opened in the Fall of 2015 and now has about 100 students who enjoy a worldclass, innovative education.
When not doing math, Paul likes to hike with his wife, Cathy, and their dog, Marvin.
Who should apply?
The target audience of this intensive summer workshop is middle school math teachers. Returning TMTC Immersion Program participants will be considered. Upper elementary school, high school and college mathematics educators are welcome to apply and may be invited to attend the workshop for free.
