Problem:

Build a roller coaster for a marble. The marble must start on one corner of the poster board, change directions at least five times, and finish in the opposite corner.

Winners:

  • 1st Place – $300 for classroom
  • 2nd Place – $200 for classroom
  • 3rd Place – $100 for classroom

Materials:

  • (1) 18” x 24” poster board or cardboard as base
  • (24) Index Cards
  • (6) sheets of copy paper (8 ½” x 11”)
  • (2) empty paper towel rolls
  • (1) cereal box
  • (2) 16.9 oz. water bottles
  • (5) small paper clips
  • 72” Masking Tape
  • 1 Marble

Restrictions:

  • You may only use the materials listed in your construction of the roller coaster. Other materials (paint, glitter, stickers) may be used for decorative purposes only.
  • Your roller coaster can only be attached to the poster board
  • The poster board must remain flat on the table
  • You are not required to use all of the materials
  • You may not touch your marble once the marble has started to move
  • You may not make any changes to your design once you have declared that your roller coaster is open to the public
  • You may test your roller coaster during construction with a “marble dummy”

  1. Sound Design and Construction: (Up to 25 points)
  2. Aesthetics: ( Up to 25 points )
  3. Creativity: ( Up to 25 points )
  4. Length of Ride: ( 1 point per second )
