OVERVIEW
Put on your waders, grab your net and let’s catch those critters! In teams, you will learn about water quality through collecting data, analyzing the health of water bodies, and determining possible solutions to water quality problems. The Summer Academy program is open to students entering the 8th, 9th or 10th grade. Come to Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow and the Rogers County Reserve from June 5-9 and be a part of this fun, activity-based adventure!
Parents
Parents are an integral part of their children’s lives and education. As such, you will be encouraged to participate in a parent orientation and a student presentation during the Academy. All activities will be supervised and safety emphasized.
Students
All applicants must be residents of Oklahoma, complete an application and submit the required documents. We encourage you to apply and meet the challenges of today’s world in math and science by exploring water quality. In teams you will communicate the results and experiences to your parents.
Academy Instructors
The Summer Academy will be conducted by two key personnel: NSU faculty Pamela Christol, an environmental scientist; and Martha Parrott, a mathematics education specialist.
Curriculum
We will explore relationships among the environment, water quality, natural science and mathematics. Using knowledge and skills acquired during the academy you will be asked to collaborate in 4-7 person teams to collect data in order to analyze the health of the water bodies, determine the possible man-made and/or naturally occurring factors that are impacting those ecosystems, and possible solutions. You will apply such skills to these real life situations as you make observations, form hypotheses, gather data and form conclusions. Experiments will be performed on various water bodies to determine water quality including pH, salinity, nitrate and/or phosphate concentrations. Connections will be made to man-made and natural impacts to water quality. We will also explore careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Who May Apply
The Summer Academy program is open to twenty-four students entering the 8th, 9th or 10th grade. If you enjoy being outdoors and are enthusiastic about water quality and the environment then this academy is for you. You must be able to commute each day to the program.
Academy Expenses
Students who complete the Summer Academy will receive a $35 stipend. There is no cost for participation in the program thanks to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, Northeastern State University, and partnership agreement with Rogers County Conservation District outdoor classroom.
Travel Information
Students will provide their own daily transportation to and from the Academy. We will provide transportation for field trips.
