SWOSU STEAM Camp

SWOSU STEAM Camp
The Southwest Alliance for Girls’ Enrichment (SAGE) will present a new Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) camp in June 2018. This is a reboot of Tech Trek at SWOSU, which was conducted from 2013 to 2017. This new opportunity incorporates the arts and humanities to enrich STEM and to be featured on their own to enhance transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, and professionalism — thus making STEAM.
In addition to inspiring a whole new generation of potential Bulldogs in STEAM, the camp offers volunteer opportunities for current SWOSU students.
What is SAGE STEAM Camp?
The Southwest Alliance for Girls’ Enrichment (SAGE) in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) camp is an overnight, week-long, summer camp for middle school girls from Oklahoma. The SAGE STEAM camp will take place on the SWOSU campus in Weatherford, OK. All sleeping, eating, instructional and recreational facilities are located on or near the SWOSU campus – with the exception of Exploration Day, during which campers will travel to Oklahoma City. Campers will focus on STEAM concepts in fun, hands-on activities.
Potential activities include:
- Interactive learning in workshops featuring science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics;
- Activities which enhance personal and professional growth and development;
- Experiencing STEAM on-sight at businesses and locations in and around Weatherford;
- Travelling to OKC to explore STEAM organizations and industries;
- Networking with women mentors in STEAM-related careers at a speed-meeting event; and
- Graduating and being recognized at a Closing Ceremony and Awards Program.
Overall, campers will benefit from the additional enrichment provided by STEAM to launch their educational and career goals.
Careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics provide highly stable, well-paying jobs. In turn, more young women entering STEM programs provide diverse perspectives from a deeper talent pool – a win-win for the U.S. economy.
So why include the Arts with STEM? Adding or emphasizing the arts and humanities may help to overcome the gender gap which still exists in STEM. A report from the Alliance for Science and Technology Research states that 47 percent of male students will show interest in a STEM career in 2017, compared to only 13.3 percent of girls with similar interests (Oklahoma Department of Labor, 2016). A 2016 report and a 2013 proceedings paper suggest adding art may increase student interest in subjects which are perceived as less enjoyable or less relatable, such as STEM.
In addition, camp committee members have observed that art has naturally infiltrated into and enriched the former Tech Trek camp over the past five years. We also recognize how the arts and humanities can, on their own, enhance transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, and professionalism. Therefore, we will work with collaborators from the arts and humanities to update and develop camp activities which incorporate and feature the Arts, to make STEAM.
To conclude, programs such as the SAGE STEAM camp offer inquiry-based opportunities to Oklahoma girls to which they may not otherwise have access. By implementing STEAM during camp, we will empower girls to seek out, recognize, and act on opportunities beyond camp as they make educational and career choices. The SAGE STEAM camp also inspires the next generation of leaders and female mentors by providing counselor opportunities to college-aged women majoring in STEM fields. Ultimately, our vision is to inspire girls to become critical thinkers and communicators, using theory, creative design, and business sense to collaboratively solve current issues which are important to Oklahoma communities.
